Playing with Pumpkins

Applied Kim Klassen’s ‘greymist’ preset in LR, then added her ‘waterfront7magic2’ texture at screen blend mode, 100% opacity and her ‘sonnet magic’ at screen blend mode, 17%.

Everywhere I go now, the grocery store, the farmers market, even the corner coffee shop, I see pumpkins. Love it! My favorites are the spooky gray ones and the baby boo’s. My online friend and fellow student in the Be Still class, Roxi Hardegree, has been playing with pumpkins for about a week and a half now and she has inspired me so much with her beautiful compositions and great photo processing. She’s also quite the master with her mobile phone and phone apps. If you are not familiar with her work, you really need to check her out HERE.

Taking a cue from Roxi, I spent some time yesterday in the studio playing with pumpkins. In addition to the textured image above, the following are some other views of my still life

Applied Kim’s ‘greymist’ preset

‘greymist’ preset also applied here

Absolutely nothing done to this image. This is SOC (straight out of camera)

Also SOC

Also SOC. In retrospect, I should have backed up a bit to show the whole pumpkin in the front. I was just smitten with its little stem that I didn’t notice that I was cropping the bottom!

So, which one do you like? I’m hooking up with Kim Klassen’s Texture Tuesday today. Head on over if you get a chance. And by the way, you’re likely to see more pumpkin pictures from me in the near future. Just saying…

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. So fun, and can tell you had so much fun doing these. If I have to choose it would be the second and third, they speak to my heart. Always good to have fun with your art.

the SOC shots look pretty darn good!

  4. Dotti says:

Carol, these are all so lovely! Yes, I love pumpkins, big, little, in-between. I haven’t given in and brought any home yet but you and Roxi are pushing me over the edge … That’s okay. Sometimes I need a little push, even to do something I want to do.

  5. I am smitten with these photos. What a gorgeous fall canvas they would make to hang up or prop on the mantel.

  6. Michelle B says:

I played with pumpkins this week too! Yours are wonderful. Isn’t amazing how many different ways a pumpkin can be photographed? I love your last image, I like the detail of the stem and don’t mind the bottom is missing at all.

  7. Cheryl says:

I love those pumpkins also…I need to photograph mine…yours are so pretty and the toning is quite nice…thanks for sharing and for letting us know the textures you used…you really did a nice job here.

  8. Sheila says:

Gorgeous images! Love the color of your pumpkins and your set-up. Love the 3rd image from the top – really the warmth it adds to the image and to the white pumpkins.

  9. I love them all! And, I like the one that you cut off the bottom, it throws you more into the photo.

  10. seabluelee says:

I like the second and third ones. But I do like that last closeup of the little one’s stem. I don’t think cropping the bottom off hurt it a bit. You make me want to get some little white pumpkins and play with them myself.

  11. Donna says:

It is such a pleasure to read that we are all learning from and being inspired by one another. Yes, I love Roxi’s work, too! Your pumpkin images are the very essence of fall. I love your compositions with a carefree tumbling of the pumpkins, scattered leaves and the use of of the designer pumpkins. I think your crops are great -because as your eye traveled so does mine – right to that sweet little curved stem. Second down from the to is my favorite!

  12. Caz says:

The curved stem caught my eye too ! I love those little white pumpkins and all your images are wonderful , my favorite is the 4th down from the top, so lovely and really shows off that pretty curved stem.

  13. Kelly says:

You’re sooc shot is amazing!!!! AMAZING! What settings did you use?

  14. Eileen S says:

Oh my gosh Carol, they are all so awesome! My favorite is the top one with the magic texture. I want to try that. I want to get the white pumpkins. What am I waiting for! And I love the curled stem❤️

  15. I love them all, but the first is truly special with the preset and textures.

  16. Pat says:

    Lovely still lifes.

  17. Prairie Jill says:

So many beautiful compositions! I really like the dark background – very effective.

  18. What glorious photos! I’ve never seen grey pumpkins before. They look lovely in your photos – as though they’re made from porcelain. Really pretty. All the best, Bonny
